Now there's another reason to get that promotion - it'll make you better in the bedroom.

New research shows that having a good job, getting married, giving birth and even getting divorced all empower women during sex. Women's experiences from motherhood to menopause make their love life improve as they get older, as they boost their feelings of self-worth.Professor Beth Montemurro from Pennsylvania State University interviewed 95 women between the ages of 20 and 68 as part of a study into sexual evolution. She found that as women matured, their attitudes on sex, relationships and self-worth altered in a surprising way.She said: 'Studying sexuality and women's sexual agency is important because sexuality has been linked to physical health and mental well-being.'Sexuality is a prime source of identification.'  Divorce in particular, often gave women a burst of confidence, with the demise of their relationships often seen as a beginning, not as an ending. Many of those questioned said it inspired an attitude of self discovery and gave them a chance to seek sexual relationships on their own terms. Before they were married, most had little sexual experience and gave little thought to their sexual desires. The professor said: 'Some women, especially older women, felt divorce bolstered their self confidence.'In many cases they looked at divorce not as an ending, but as a second chance to seek out something they wanted, rather than following their partner's lead.'The study also found that younger women who were more sexually adventurous as young adults found marriage enhanced their confidence between the sheets. She said: 'Marriage gave them a chance to reinvent themselves. 'They may be less sexually active right now than before they were married, but feel better about sex because they felt like they were doing it for the right reasons.'Motherhood was also seen to boost sexual confidence in some cases. Even though having children is often portrayed as a sexually-stifling event, some of the participants who were mothers said having a child made them more sexually self-assured and comfortable with their bodies.Professor Montemurro said: 'The women said being a mother showed them how powerful their bodies were and how universal the experience of motherhood was.'She continued: 'It made them respect their own bodies, which is an empowering feeling.'The same feeling of power applied to success in the workplace - women who considered themselves accomplished tended to be more satisfied with their sex lives. The Professor said: 'In general, accomplishment in life makes women more confident.'When women feel such self pride they feel entitled to sexual desire, as well.'The feelings of self-confidence didn't necessarily wane later on in life either, as the research also found ageing and menopause led to more acceptance.Women said they felt a sense of peace with the change and were less concerned about trying to conform to expectations of body image.
