Azerbaijan has recovered remains believed to belong to 913 people missing as a result of the Karabakh conflict as of October 1, Ali Nagiyev, head of the State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons, said.

At the end of June, authorities had reported recovering remains believed to belong to 893 people, meaning the number has increased by 20 over the past three months.

Nagiyev said remains believed to belong to 253 people had been exhumed from 32 mass graves discovered in territories retaken by Azerbaijan.

As of October 1, the State Commission listed 4,010 Azerbaijani citizens as missing. Of those, 4,004 went missing during the First Karabakh War and six during the 44-day war in 2020.

The missing include 3,228 military personnel and 782 civilians, including 71 children, 288 women and 319 elderly people.

Biological samples have been collected from a total of 11,566 relatives of missing persons to help identify the remains.
