Former Azerbaijani Economy Minister Farhad Aliyev, who was released from prison in October, has been granted asylum in the UK, Yeni Musavat daily says, citing an unnamed source close to government.

Aliyev was arrested on attempted coup and corruption charges in 2005 along with his brother, Rafiq Aliyev, former owner of Azpetrol energy company.

Farhad left for Germany for medical treatment in November and never returned.
