Tajik Senate approves bill giving president "leader of nation" status

Members of the upper house of the country's parliament [the National Assembly] have unanimously supported the bill "On the Founder of Peace and National Unity - Leader of the Nation" approved by the lower house of parliament on 9 December.
Addressing senators on this issue, Senator Muhammadyusuf Imomzoda, who is also the rector of the National University of Tajikistan, said "the declaration of the incumbent president of the country, Emomali Rahmon, Leader of the Nation was the reflection of the people's love to their distinguished son".
Imomzoda believes that "Emomali Rahmon has once again proved the fact that history is created by personalities".
"Emomali Rahmon's service to the Tajik people is not less than that of Cyrus the Great or Ismoil Somoni [powerful and influential ruler from the Samanid dynasty that ruled in Central Asia] done in their times," the senator said.
He is convinced that the law has nothing to do with authoritarianism or personal cult.
The senator said in line with provisions of the law, an order and state award of Leader of the Nation will be instituted in the country.
The law also stipulates that it will be mandatory to take into account the appeals and addresses of the Leader of the Nation while making decisions on domestic and foreign policy in Tajikistan even after the expiration of his presidential term in office.
The Speaker of the upper house of the Tajik parliament, Mahmadsaid Ubaydulloyev, said in his address on this issue that "in Tajikistan no one loves the homeland and this people more than Emomali Rahmon".
The approved bill defines the powers of the Leader of the Nation, his immunity after leaving the post of president of Tajikistan and provides transport, residence and social benefits to him after the expiration of his presidential term in office.
The law also stipulates that after leaving the post of president, the Leader of the Nation will retain the right to appeal to the people of the country, participate in vital state measures and support them.
