Michael Adams fights back at Chess World Cup in Baku

Adams blundered a pawn in the first game, lost, and had to win the return to stay in the match.

The contest now goes to a two-game Rapid Chess tie-break with 25 minutes each and an increment of 10 seconds per move.

Adams played with the advantage of the white pieces and gradually built up his forces on the kingside.

Laznicka’s decision to block the centre with 19...d4 gave Adams a relatively free hand, but it was 22...g6 that gave him his opportunity.

After 25.Kf2! it suddenly became clear that a devastating and unstoppable attack was coming down the h-file.
