France Unrest: Macron Vows Crackdown as Over 2,000 Detained
19.10.2026 11:00

French President Emmanuel Macron has vowed that those responsible for looting and targeting public institutions will face severe legal consequences. The French leader said he shared the public's "anger" and "shame" over widespread property destruction, attributing the violence to radical far-left factions joined by criminal elements.

Macron instructed regional prefects and mayors to reinforce protection around government buildings and commercial districts, while opening the door to targeted demonstration bans where necessary. He is also set to deliver a national address addressing the ongoing crisis.

The mass demonstrations, initially sparked by rising fuel prices and eroding purchasing power (with turnout estimated at 550,000 by the Interior Ministry and 800,000 by organizers), rapidly devolved into intense clashes with security forces. Over 2,000 people have been detained nationwide, while 600 police officers have sustained injuries. In Paris, riot-control tactical units were deployed to Place de la République, where police used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse masked protesters looting stores.

Severe rioting also rocked Marseille, where the Bouches-du-Rhône police prefecture estimated the crowd involved in looting during the October 17 unrest reached 30,000 individuals, leading to 99 arrests and 118 injured law enforcement personnel.
