Kazakhstan plans to buy two container ships from Azerbaijan, each with a capacity of 700 TEU, by 2027 to boost container traffic across the Caspian Sea, Transport Minister Nurlan Sauranbayev said during a government meeting, Caspianlife.kz reported.

He stated that work to upgrade transport infrastructure at border hubs is underway, and modernization of the Aktau and Kuryk seaports under the “Caspian Knot” initiative continues at full pace.

According to the prime minister’s press service, the first phase of constructing a container hub in Aktau, in partnership with China’s Lianyungang company, will be completed by the end of the year. Dredging of port waters and modernization of berths in Aktau are also ongoing.

In Kuryk, construction of the multifunctional “Sarja” terminal is progressing, while efforts to increase the capacity of the railway line leading to the ports continue.

Sauranbayev added that these projects will raise the combined throughput capacity of the Aktau and Kuryk ports to 30 million tonnes per year.
