Putin: Only ALLAH knows why Turkey shot down our jet

A diplomatic war has erupted between the two countries after the Russian jet was shot down on November 24 after Turkey said it encroached into its air space.

Moscow claimed it had not, and Mr Putin has also accused Turkey of profiting from smuggling ISIS oil through the country, which Recep Erdogan said was "slander".

But Mr Putin has gone on the offensive again, saying that: "Only Allah knows why they did it. And I guess Allah decided to punish the ruling clique in Turkey by stripping it of its sanity."

Last week, the Russian president alleged that a creeping Islamisation has set in under Erdogan's watch.

He told the TASS news agency: "The problem is not the tragedy we witnessed yesterday. The problem is much deeper.

"We observe that the current Turkish leadership over a significant number of years has been pursuing a deliberate policy of supporting the Islamisation of their country."

Mr Putin's view is shared by Muslim ally, the Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, who said on social media: "Turkey is not fighting ISIS! They are making business, they buy oil from them and finance the enemies of Islam who kill thousands of Muslims."

"I am the defender of Islam and Turkish authorities are helping to destroy Muslim nations and peoples. Wake up!"

The pilots on board the fighter jet shot down near Turkey's border with Syria bailed out, but one was shot dead, reportedly by rebel forces of the Free Syrian Army as he parachuted down.

A rescue helicopter sent to help the pilots was then blown up by rebels, leading to the death of a Russian solider.

The gun used appeared to be an American anti-tank missile.
