Saudi Arabia ready to 'send ground troops' to fight ISIS in Syria

The United States is scheduled to convene a meeting of defence ministers from countries fighting ISIS – also known as Daesh – in Brussels later this month.

"We are determined to fight and defeat Daesh," Brig. Gen. Ahmed Asiri said.

Asiri is yet to confirm how many troops the kingdom will send.

Saudi Arabia is deeply involved in Yemen's civil war, where it is fighting Iranian-backed Shiite rebels.

Asiri's announcement came shortly after Russia said it suspects Turkey of planning a military invasion of Syria.

Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said in a statement that the Russian military has registered: "a growing number of signs of hidden preparation of the Turkish armed forces for active actions on the territory of Syria."

In December Britain began its bombing campaign in Syria targeting the death cult.

British warplanes – launched from RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus – have struck at the heart of ISIS territory across Iraq and Syria over the last few weeks.

As yet, neither Britain or the United States have been prepared to commit to ground troops in the region.
