Gangs effectively run La Modelo, a notorious jail in Managua in Nicaragua, Central America.

Inmates take part in violent boxing matches and fights just to pass the time.

In one shocking photo, a man shows off a scar on his back after a violent guard gave him a beating.

In another, a man is dressed as a woman in a tight pink skirt with bare buttocks.

Jailbirds share 15ft x 15ft cells with up to 11 other blokes, have no running water and use a hole in the ground as a toilet.

The same filthy pit is used to shower and wash dishes.

The prison was built in 1958 but has been neglected ever since by Nicaragua's corrupt justice system.

But a sister of an inmate has set up the Facebook page SDN La Modelo Nicaragua, which has more than 12,000 likes, to document the appalling conditions.

Jason Puracal, 38, was caged after being accused of drug trafficking and money laundering through his real estate businesses in Nicaragua.

But his family claimed he has been refused food, water and access to his attorney.

They added he was beaten, injected forcibly and denied medical treatment.

Wayne Cooperman, 63, was accused of sexual abuse in 2013.

The clothing manufacturer had to share a dirty cell with 11 other blokes and sleep on the concrete floor.

Social media users have been left appalled by the disturbing updates on Facebook.

Rios Arguello Alexander wrote: "Ideally, all the guys that are there should have psychological therapy to be able to get out of that but the government doesn't care."

Oscar Velasquez added: "They need better conditions, because it is necessary to have them."

Rita Morales posted: "These people have human rights. Where are their human rights? It abuses their rights."

It follows an investigation by Daily Star Online in September, which revealed who veteran lag Charles Bronson deemed Britain's worst criminals behind bars.

He dubbed The Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe, child killer John Straffen and Moors Murderer Ian Brady as some of the worst crooks ever.
