Now ISIS are throwing women suicide bombers into battle

The organisation, sometimes known as Daesh, are better known for their "jihadi brides" but they have changed tactics and are now using women in combat.

At least seven Daesh women are in custody in Libya and three more have been killed in fighting in the city of Sabratha in the last week.

Taher al-Gharabli, head of Libya's military council, told The Times: "Several female operatives have been killed this week, fighting alongside the men. One of them tried to blow herself up, wearing an explosive vest."

The mayor of Sabratha, Hussein al-Thwadi, said: "The women mostly handle the logistics of the battle, but they are also fighting."

Ironically Libya's former dictator Colonel Gaddafi, who was killed in 2011, had surrounded himself with an elite female bodyguard and had many women in his army.

Last week it was reported that British special forces commandos had been sent to Libya to try and wipe out ISIS cells there, who are trying to fill the vacuum left behind after the Gaddafi regime collapsed.

In Syria and Iraq ISIS have an all-female al-Khansaa Brigade, which patrols the IS strongholds of of Raqqa, Syria, and Mosul, Iraq, administering punishments to women who do not abide by the group's harsh version of Islam.

In January the brigade reportedly tortured a 21-year-old Syrian woman to death in the town of Manbij for dress code violations.

Last month it was reported that Daesh fighters were shaving their beards and dressing up as women to flee Iraqi Army forces as they retreated from Ramadi.

In January Daily Star Online reported how two British women were fighting alongside the SAS against ISIS in Syria.
