Bourhan Hraichie allegedly sliced "e4e", a reference to the "eye for an eye" phrase often used by jihadis, into a fellow inmate's head.

Mr Hraichie, who is just 18-years-old and is believed to have been radicalised while in prison, viscously attacked a 40-year-old thought to be a former soldier.

He put a towel over the man's face and poured boiling water over it before cutting the revenge statement into his head, according to officials.

The assault, which left the cellmate in hospital with facial burns and head injuries, took place at Kempsey Prison, New South Wales, Australia.

Corrective Services Commissioner Peter Severin said: "The attack appears to have had a strong fundamentalist element to it.

"Hraichie clearly identified himself as a radical.

"I am appalled that these two inmates were placed in the same cell.

"This was a serious mistake and is under investigation."

Prison guard spokesman Steve McMahon expressed previous concerns over Hraichie's radicalisation.

He said: "The 18-year-old, in our belief, had presented enough information and bad behaviour to have been segregated, or at the very least, been put in a single cell."

Corrections Minister David Elliott said: "I will ask the Inspector of Custodial Services for a full and thorough investigation of the management of radicalised prisoners in the system, including the assault."
