Muslims to outnumber Christians in Europe 'very soon’ – shock claim

Koen Geens told a European Parliament committee that Europe "does not realise this, but this is the reality”.

But Belgian deputy prime minister Jan Jambon warned MEPs: "The worst thing we can do is to make an enemy of Islam.

"To make an enemy of all of those people, we really will be creating problem.”

He made the comments at hearing into the last month's Brussels attacks by Islamic State fanatics.

Jambon went to to say that "we need to get… Muslims on our side” in order to snuff out terrorists.

The deputy prime minister was accused of fuelling tensions with Belgium’s Muslim community when he claimed Muslims were "dancing” after the Brussels attacks that killed 32.

He also accused Muslim residents of the Molenbeek district of attacking cops during last month’s operation to arrest Paris attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam.

Several terrorists involved in the attacks lived in Molenbeek – which has a large Muslim population.

Eurostat – Brussels’ statistics group – does not compile figures on religion.

However European Commission figures from 2012 show that 72 per cent of people across Europe said they were Christian – compared to two per cent who identified themselves as Muslim.
