Athletes to get double-strength condoms to combat Zika virus

The epidemic has now been declared over but researchers have monitored 450 survivors of both sexes for a year, testing tears, saliva, faeces, vaginal fluids and semen every three months thereafter.

And worryingly the Ebola virus was detected in 10 specimens taken from eight men, for up to a whopping nine months after recovery.

The virus, which causes muscle weakness, severe vomiting and weight loss, was present in around 30% of samples taken between the 1st and 3rd months.

The study forms part of a larger two year, 700 man, woman and child study of the survivors to identify potential risks of reactivating the virus, or transmitting it sexually.

The academics at Donka University Hospital in Guinea recommend survivors use condoms in the months after recovery.

The research comes soon after a Scottish nurse returned to hospital after falling ill with Ebola for a third time.

Pauline Cafferkey, of South Lanarkshire, was originally infected while working in Sierra Leone in December 2014.

Fears grew earlier this month the horrid yellow fever virus may reach Britain.
