Massive sinkhole opens up and swallows dozens of cars

Firefighters were sent to the scene, in Florence, Italy, in an attempt to salvage some of the swallowed up goods but no injuries were reported.

Dario Nardella, the mayor of Florence, said the hole was caused by a gash in a water pipeline, which is one of the main water sources for the surrounding neighbourhood.

He urged people parked around the Lungarno Torrigiani area to remove their vehicles.

There were concerns the soggy concrete wouldn't be able to take the weight of cranes but rescue operations were in progress earlier today.

Local authorities confirmed two buildings nearby had been evacuated after the hole opened up.

The water supply was cut off in an attempt to stop the hole opening up further and 18,000 bottles of water were distributed to locals.

Recently, a sinkhole opened up in Greenwich, south London, after a night of heavy rain and swallowed a car.

A hotel in Norwich was also closed off after a double decker bus was swallowed up by a sinkhole crater.
