Armenia breaks ceasefire with Azerbaijan

Armenian armed forces stationed on the nameless heights of Armenia’s Ijevan district and the Barekamavan village of the country’s Noyemberyan district, opened fire at Azerbaijani positions located in the village of Gaymagli and the nameless heights of Gazakh district.

Azerbaijani positions located in the villages Kokhanabi and Aghbulag of Tovuz district took fire from the positions located in Chinari village of Armenia’s Berd district.

Moreover, Azerbaijani positions took fire from the positions located near the Chilaburt village of Terter district, Ashagi Seyidahmadli village of Fizuli district and the nameless heights of Goranboy district.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
