Peres passed away in a clinic near Tel Aviv earlier in the day after spending around two weeks in a stroke-induced coma, Sputnik International reported.

"Today, with deep sorrow, we say goodbye to our father, the ninth president of Israel, Shimon Peres," the former president's son told reporters at the clinic.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has already expressed his grief over Peres' death and is set to hold a cabinet meeting to mourn his passing.
