Germany intends to spend an average of 70-80 billion euros annually on defense over the next few years, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on the eve of the NATO summit in Madrid, reported from ARD TV.

The chancellor stressed that Germany had made a significant contribution to strengthening NATO.

"Germany is now the largest contributor to NATO, along with the United States. It's about the Alliance's combat capability," Scholz said.

The meeting of NATO at the level of heads of state and government will be held in Madrid on June 28-30. The participants will adopt a new strategic concept and discuss the strengthening of the Alliance as well as the impact of global climate change on the security sector.
