Russia's 400m footbridge in the sky

Russia's 400m footbridge in the sky
03.10.2014 11:33
The 439-metre-long SkyBridge lies 207 metres above the Krasnaya Polyana valley, and forms part of the Sochi SkyPark, located to the north-east of this year's Winter Olympic host city.

The footbridge, which opened in the summer, also includes two observation platforms, each offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the Black Sea coast, while the most intrepid visitors can bungee jump from an observation deck halfway across. The SkyPark also contains a "MegaTroll" zip-wire ride, which whisks brave souls for 700 metres at speeds of around 90mph. Then there's SochiSwing, described as "the highest swing in the world" on the company’s website.Built from 740 tons of steel and 2,000 cubic metres of concrete, the SkyBridge can supposedly withstand earthquakes, hurricane winds, rain, snow and ice, according to its creators, the firm AJ Hackett. Its website - which exhibits an over-reliance on imperfect language translation tools - adds: "Everyone who has traveled many times across the gap with the movie characters, can now overcome your fear and conquer space in reality, just across the bridge skybridge. Skybridge is calculated on all the safety standards by a wide margin."The new footbridge is among the latest vertigo-inducing attractions around the world to have recently opened. They include two in China: a swaying glass-bottomed bridge, stretching 300 metres between two mountain peaks, and a glass-floored cliff-side pathway 1,900 metres above sea level on the side of the Tianmen Mountain.Last month it was reported that the Caminito del Rey, which has been dubbed “the world’s scariest footpath”, is to re-open in southern Spain next winter. The trail skirts the edge of the narrow Gaitanes Gorge in southern Spain.Earlier this year, the Glacier Skywalk, a new viewing platform 280 metres above the Sunwapta Valley in Jasper National Park, opened to the public. Visitors can now walk out beyond the cliff edge to get a better view of their surroundings. The Step into the Void attraction, a five-sided glass viewing box sitting 3,842 metres above the Chamonix Valley in the Mont Blanc Massif mountain range, was opened to the public last year. The box, made of three layers of tempered glass, each 12mm thick, can withstand winds of 220km/h and a temperature range of 60C.Win one of 40 holidays worth £800,000Telegraph Travel Awards 2014: vote for your favourite destinations and travel companies for the chance to win one of 40 luxury breaks worth a total of £800,000.(telegraph.co.uk)Bakudaily.Az
