Five-year-old Bowen Toomey was born without arms or legs, but he doesn't let his physical disability prevent him from enjoying the activities that any child his age would.
Devon Toomey, who adopted then-18-month-old Bowen in 2010, told Today.com that the Serbian-born boy loves going to kindergarten, bouncing on trampolines, swimming, reading and playing with his two siblings, Heath, eight, and Brooks, five.
'He does everything any other kid does, he just finds his way to do it. So if they’re riding their skateboard, he rides his skateboard. He already knows how to get on it, and push himself down the driveway,' said Mrs Toomey, who lives in Eagle, Iowa.
And his older brother Heath steps in when other kids tease him.
'Sometimes people stare at him, and people have called him weird. Sometimes I explain how Bowen was born and that he can do a lot of things that we can,' Heath said.
Mrs Toomey, who has documented Bowen's story on her blog since she first saw him in 2009, said she wanted to help others see that special needs adoption 'isn't something to be feared.'
'You can adopt kids with special needs and they thrive just like any other child, they just need the opportunity,' she added.
