Hungary, Slovakia block EU's response to Georgia's adoption of foreign agents law

Hungary and Slovakia blocked a statement on behalf of all 27 EU states regarding the adoption of the law "On Transparency of Foreign Influence” in Georgia, the European Commission said, reported from Imedi TV.

The EC said that the statement will be made in a different format.

Yesterday the Georgian parliament passed the bill on foreign agents in the third reading. The discussion of the bill took place against the backdrop of protests and clashes between MPs from the ruling Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia party and opposition parties that are against the law.

Earlier, the foreign ministers of 12 EU states called for preparing response measures from Brussels in the event of the final adoption of the controversial law.

The European Parliament adopted a tough resolution that lists recommended responses. These include personal sanctions, a revision of the visa-free regime for Georgia, suspension of financial assistance, and refusal to begin negotiations on the country’s accession to the union.
