Bottlenose dolphins attack and kill two porpoises for FUN - PHOTO

Caroline Weir, from St Cyrus in Aberdeenshire, photographed the incident from her bedroom window before posting it online. The pictures show two dolphins repeatedly throwing around one of the porpoises. The two porpoises were later washed up dead, both with horrific injuries to their heads, and deep, gaping holes around their eyes. Experts at the Scottish Marine Animal Strandings Scheme said that the dolphins - thought to be juvenile males - were probably just playing. Although it is not precisely known why the dolphins attack, it has been likened to a 'cat and mouse' style game - similar to how humans play fight.According to experts once the porpoise is dead, the dolphin will lose interest in it, as it will not eat the remains. The bodies of the creatures were removed from the beach for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.Porpoises are distinct from dolphins, as they have shorter beaks and flattened, spade-shaped teeth. In a post on its Facebook page, the Scottish Marine Animal Strandings Scheme, said: 'Flipper is not as sweet and innocent as he seems.'Bottlenose dolphins regularly do this, a bit like a cat plays with a mouse. 'Once the porpoise is dead they lose interest. They are also known to kill infants of their own species.'They don't really compete for food, and they don't eat them so nobody really knows why it happens.Emms Daniels posted: 'I never knew dolphins would attack one of their own.'Just seems really strange, seeing these injuries and knowing how we see dolphins as sweet and innocent, when in fact they have a really dark side.'Jenny Saunders said: 'Just like people really, you get good ones and not so good ones. 'Dolphins are as socially complex as us.'(dailymail.co.uk)ANN.Az
