Cristiano Ronaldo DID NOT donate £5million to Nepal earthquake appeal, charity says

Cristiano Ronaldo DID NOT donate £5million to Nepal earthquake appeal, charity says
15.05.2015 11:30
It was claimed the Real Madrid star, one of the richest sportsmen in the world, had given the staggering donation in the wake of devastating disaster.

Nepal has been hit by two powerful quakes in the past three weeks – killing over 8,000 people and injuring almost 20,000.

Ronaldo is an ambassador for Save the Children and was reported to have made the donation out of his own pocket.

But the charity has since released a statement refuting the claims.

"The global ambassador for Save the Children, Cristiano Ronaldo, has used his voice and his global visibility to raise awareness of the problems that the most vulnerable children around the world, including those affected by the earthquake in Nepal face," the statement read.

"The latest information on the donation of Cristiano Ronaldo to the emergency response of Save the Children is false.

"After the second earthquake, which has brought further devastation to the country, the NGO wants to thank Cristiano Ronaldo and other influential people for their support in publicising the situation facing children and families in Nepal."

Following the first earthquake Ronaldo, 30, issued an emergency appeal to his 100m Facebook followers to support the relief efforts in the region.

Ronaldo and his Real Madrid teammates are facing up to a trophyless season after crashing out of the Champions League in Wednesday night's semi-final against Juventus.

Despite a penalty from the Portuguese the defending champions were undone by former striker Alvaro Morata's away goal.

Domestically Real are four points behind arch-rivals Barcelona with just two games remaining.
