Twitter PORN ban: Over 10 million users could be blocked

Twitter PORN ban: Over 10 million users could be blocked
20.05.2015 09:30
According to the content boundaries on the social media platform, users "may not use pornographic or excessively violent media" in their "profile image, header image, or background image".

Yet a quick scan of the site will see tens of thousands of users posting explicit photos daily, if not hourly.

SunTrust Robinson Humphrey analyst Robert Peck has predicted that soon Twitter will be purging these users forever.

"Bearish investors point out that one can still see users that that are violating Twitter's [terms of service] and we would expect these users will need to be purged at some point," he wrote, according to Business Insider.

He added that this could affect up to 10 million users of the social media platform.

The prediction has terrified porn publishers – who fear they could lose their online accounts and publicity.

"Twitter is one of the few large social media platforms that doesn’t apply a lot of censorship rules to our images so by default it’s a network tool in the adult industry," adult actress Mercedes Carrera told the Daily Beast.

Despite the rules about pornographic material Twitter is largely uncensored and sexually explicitly content doesn't actually violate terms of service.

If uploading anything particularly naked or violent, users should apply the account setting "mark my media as containing sensitive content".

"We do not mediate content. All content should be mark appropriately as per our guidelines," the Twitter Media Policy states.

The potential ban could have something to do with Twitter's disastrous revenue forecast, which was leaked last month.

The report stated that quarterly revenue fell well short of expectations and sent shares down by as much as 24%.

After the leak, Nielsen, a global television and digital data company, pulled its advertising campaign after discovering its promoted tweets on porn-associated pages.

There has been no official word yet from Twitter regarding the mass purge.
